OUR VISION
As a premier academic middle school, JL Long will empower our diverse student body to become engaged, life-long learners who take ownership of their community and their academic future.
OUR MISSION
Cultivate young minds and spirits for global leadership in academics.
OUR CORE VALUES
• We are principled
• We are communicators
• We are inquirers
IB MISSION STATEMENT
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
WHAT IS IB MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAM (MYP)?
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program at JL Long serves all students (grades 6-8). The IB MYP offers an educational approach that goes beyond traditional school subjects. The IB MYP is about making connections among subjects and relating in-school learning to the outside world. The IB MYP program is a framework, not a curriculum. JL Long still follows the Dallas ISD curriculum, but the learning does not stop at the traditional multiple-choice assessments. Student demonstrate their learnings through their IB assessments where they apply their knowledge and complete a summative assessment task in each subject area.
OUR COMMUNITY
As global thinkers and caring young people, our students always look out for those around them. Students and staff participate in many community efforts to make the world better one-step at a time. This could include planning and coordinating a coat drive for a local homeless shelter, cleaning up a local green space, or even volunteering their time at a community non-profit.
8TH GRADE COMMUNITY PROJECT
At the end of the Middle Years Program, our eighth graders will complete a community project. Students will focus on an issue that is affecting our community, raise awareness around the issue, come up with a plan toward a solution, and take action. Some students may choose to go beyond their local community and participate in a national or global effort.
IB LEARNER PROFILE
The International Baccalaureate (IB) learner profile describes a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success.
They imply a commitment to help all members of the school community learn to respect themselves, others and the world around them.
Each of the IB's program is committed to the development of students according to the IB learner profile. The profile aims to develop learners who are:
• Inquirers
• Knowledgeable
• Thinkers
• Communicators
• Principled
• Open-minded
• Caring
• Risk-takers
• Balanced
• Reflective
WE ARE GLOBALLY AWARE!
As an International Baccalaureate campus, our students work to develop certain attributes and become life-long learners of certain skills.
We focus on our students achieving these different traits through our unit plans and projects. To accomplish this goal, we have dedicated 16 minutes during the Advisory period that focuses on building each student's educational study skills, social skills, and global awareness on different community issues.
