A robotics club is a gathering of students who are interested in learning about, working with, and building robots. Below are some of the competitions DISD offers:
The VEX IQ Challenge provides middle school students with exciting, open-ended robotics challenges that enhance their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills through hands-on, student-centered learning. The VEX IQ Challenge fosters student development of the teamwork, critical thinking, project management, and communication skills required to prepare them to become the next generation of innovators and problem solvers. The VEX IQ Challenge is aimed at grades 3 through 8 for teams of 6 to 8 students.
Guided by adult Coaches, FIRST LEGO League teams research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc., and are challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build, program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS or SPIKE Prime sets, then compete on a table-top playing field. It all adds up to tons of fun while they learn to apply science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (STEM), plus a big dose of imagination, to solve a problem. The FIRST LEGO League Challenge is aimed at grades 4 through 8 for teams of 5 to 7 students.
RADC Aerial Drone Competition offers students in middle school an opportunity to learn to safely operate a drone and work together as a team. The intersection of sport and technology, experience an educational drone sporting RAD Competition Event to see the dedication, innovation, and excitement unfold among students who are reaching new heights and leveraging real-world skills to amplify their futures. Along the way, students learn engineering by building their own ready-to-fly drone, and learn programming using multiple coding platforms. The RAD Aerial Drone Competition is aimed at grade 8 students with 4-5 team members. Only one team is allowed per campus.
