Parents, we are excited for Wednesday’s Buc Camp! As many of you have questions, we’ve tried to condense the most common questions here in this post. Please read through all of them so you are familiar with the day. See you Wednesday!
Arrival Time: Buc Camp begins at 9:00 a.m. Feel free to drop your child off anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Please do not arrive too late after 9:00 a.m. as we don’t want him or her to miss anything!
Arrival Place: Everyone will check in at a table on the front lawn of the school. Each student will be given a colored wristband indicating his or her group for the day. After an announcement is made, the students will file into the auditorium (far right door and up the steps).
Pick-Up from Buc Camp: Students will be released on the front lawn at 1:00 p.m. Please let your student know where you will be waiting in your car so he or she will know where to find you. There is not a carpool system with numbers or speakers. Students are let out all at once. Due to limited space, we do not recommend parking and getting out of your car to meet your child. Picking up in the teacher’s parking lot to the left of the school is never permitted.
What About Parents: After students are dropped off, parents are invited to attend a brief Q & A in the Cafeteria with the PTA President and the Principal. The Cafeteria is through the far right door and down the steps. Parents are welcome to leave the campus and pick their student(s) back up at 1:00 p.m. The parents will not attend Buc Camp activities with the students. All parents must wear a mask inside the building!
What if I Forgot to Register for Buc Camp?: Buc Camp is open to all incoming 6th Grade students. If you have not yet registered, please do so in our PTA Website by 4:00 pm TODAY. While we ask that you pre-register your student, we will not turn away any unregistered attendees. We are also opening Buc Camp up to any 7th or 8th grader who is either new to the school or who did not attend in-person during the 2020-2021 school year. It is NOT required for 7th and 8th graders to attend. Please do not drop your 7th or 8th grader off if they attended in-person at Long last year or the year before.
Dress Code: The 6th graders will wear a white collared shirt and appropriate shorts/pants/skirt (navy, khaki, black, or plaid skirt). The 7th graders will wear a grey collared shirt and appropriate shorts/pants/skirt. The 8th graders will wear a navy collared shirt and appropriate shorts/pants/skirt. ALL attendees will be required to wear a mask!
What to Bring: Your student should not bring anything with them other than a great attitude and a smile! Please do not bring a binder, any type of school supplies, or a backpack. There is a good chance these will get lost.
Will There be Food: Yes, Burger House is providing hamburgers to all students. A meatless/no patty option will be available; however, a gluten-free option will not. Water will also be provided.
What Will the Students be Doing: Buc Camp is broken down into stations with one group touring, another getting a badges, and another team-building.
Badges: Every attempt will be made to have your student’s badge made during Buc Camp. However, as the school only has two badge machines and technology can be finicky at times, we cannot guarantee your student will have his or her badge made. However, there will also be an opportunity during Meet the Teacher on Friday, August 13 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Badges will also be made by groups during the first week of school. If your child does not have a badge on the first day of school, it is okay. He or she will have one by the end of the first week. Sadly, just like the DPS office, we cannot accommodate “re-dos” if your student does not like his or her picture.
School Supplies: During the first few days of school, each teacher will provide a syllabus and a list of required school supplies. There is not a list of supplies needed per grade.
Schedules: The counselors are working very, very hard on getting the schedules ready for distribution at Buc Camp. Schedules are also available now on Power School. There is also a possibility that your student’s schedule is wrong. There are a lot of students, and these things happen. It is okay!! However, please know, schedule change requests will NOT be made during Buc Camp. Please do not line up outside the counselor’s office asking for a change. The counselors will work hard over the next week to get your student’s schedule correct. Do not panic or call the office if your student’s schedule is not correct on the first day of school. It will be changed as soon as it is humanly possible. We promise!
Chromebooks: If you need a Chromebook, these will be issued during Meet the Teacher on Friday, August 13th from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm. If the school runs out, they will order more through the IT department. Your student will not be required to have one on the first day of school.
