PTA E-Newsletter - At Home Learning Week 2

Hello Buccaneers!

Today marks the beginning of our second week of at home learning.  I am continuously impressed by the work of teachers and parents who have stepped up to fill in gaps and make things work. Parents are overwhelmed, students miss their friends and teachers are in the space between district directives/technology issues/access challenges/personal life balance/etc. Now we will continue to lead with patience, grace and understanding.  Please read below for important reminders for this week!

In an effort to keep communication going smoothly with students, teachers have scheduled certain days to hold conference calls.  For example if a teacher wants to hold a "Live Q&A" to clear any misconceptions or questions students might have, he or she will do so on the day assigned for the subject. Each core subject will receive a day to schedule conference meetings with students and electives will split one day. For example, here is the schedule for this week (3/30/2020 -4/3/2020):

Monday:  Math (All day)
Tuesday:  Science (All day)
Wednesday:  Reading (All day)
Thursday:  Individuals & Societies (All day)
Friday:  Lang Acq & Desgin (9:00am-11:30), 4/3/2020 - PE/Fine Arts (12:30 - 3:00)

Teachers will only schedule conference meetings with their students during their designated day so that each student has sufficient time to receive any additional instruction that may be needed.  Conference calls are not mandatory for students unless specified by the teacher. The students can still email and text their teachers to ask questions or set up a different time if needed. The purpose of this is for students to focus on communicating with one teacher at a time and not be overwhelmed with 8 subject meetings all in one day.  Students are still required to check into the Google Classroom for each period every day and complete the assigned work.

The schedule listed above will be used for conference meetings every week.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Counseling & Guidance

We can’t control what has happened, but we can control how we respond to what is happening.

The crisis around COVID-19 is leaving an indelible footprint on the hearts and minds of multiple generations of children and adults—even our youngest ones who are not yet old enough to realize it. The impact and ripple effects across our collective livelihoods is likely too vast to comprehend.

It’s scary. But it’s not hopeless.

Recognizing our emotions and leveraging the science of SEL (Social Emotional Learning) is more important now than ever.

Our counselors are here for you and can support us in managing our roller coaster of emotions over the coming days and months. For many of us it’s dealing with daily uncertainty and new ways of interacting.

Please contact our counselors if you have questions or need guidance.

Call For Volunteers

Dear Long Families:

The Department of  Partnership and Volunteer Services is requesting volunteers to helpFood & Child Nutrition Services with the distribution of meals.  J.L. Long Middle School has been designated a school for meal distribution.

PVS is asking for five volunteers to work 3.5 hours beginning on Monday, March 23-April 9.

Five Volunteers are needed every Monday and Thursday, 9:30 a.m.-1:00p.m. to help distribute meals to families curbside.

Interested volunteers who have been cleared, passed the background check, completed the orientation and can attest that they are clear of coronavirus symptoms are asked to apply.

Partnership and Volunteer Services has created an opportunity for this project on the JL Long ‘voly’ site. The PVS Team will provide volunteers with any additional information as they sign up and share their names with the campus administrators. They should report to the main office upon arrival to the campus. Volunteers can also email me if they are interested.

Thank you,

Natalie D. Tanner
